live at map mima

In March 2025, I was invited to complete a short residency at Lake Macquarie Arts’ 360 degree projection space and venue, MAP mima. The residency culminated in a two-hour performance in the space, during which I decorated long-form field recordings of environments around the lake and projected 360-degree taken from various spots overlooking the lake’s northern edge. The video above features some short excerpts from the longer performance, showing the immersive projection space by also being captured in 360-degree video.

It was both challenging and interesting to attempt in-depth encounters with place in such a short timespan - at first I found it difficult to engage with the lake on my own. Lake Macquarie is very large, and difficult to circumnavigate due to relatively consistent development around its edges. That said, there are several stunning viewpoints on the northern edge, accessed through some beautiful temperate woodland. Recordings of the area featured in the performance capture both the biodiversity of the place as well as the prevalent urban inhabitants.

The images below show some of the process over the days preceding the performance. Thank you to Lake Macquarie Arts and David Rastas for putting me up in the Lake House for my stay, and supporting an open-ended vision in this project.
